What is sphingomonas parapaucimobilis?

Sphingomonas paucimobilis is a gram-negative bacterium found in soil, water, and various other environmental sources. It is an opportunistic pathogen and can cause infections in immunocompromised individuals, particularly those who have been hospitalized or have medical devices implanted in the body.

S. paucimobilis is known for its ability to degrade a wide range of organic compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and chlorinated hydrocarbons. This makes it useful in bioremediation and environmental cleanup efforts.

Recently, S. paucimobilis has been reclassified as Sphingomonas parapaucimobilis based on genetic and biochemical analysis. This change in classification does not impact its importance in bioremediation and as an opportunistic pathogen.
